The RA ESCS Ministry participated in the online discussion of the roadmap for the implementation of the "Education for Sustainable Development-2030 Framework" which was organized by UNESCO with the participation of North America and European member states.

The discussion focused on the global framework of “Education for Sustainable Development” for 2020-2030, approved by the 40th UNESCO General Conference; and the implementation of a new roadmap for member states. During the meeting, the importance of strengthening the education component as a precondition for sustainable development was highlighted. It was noted that the roadmap outlines the fields that can be implemented by member states at the regional and global levels including the civil society and development partners.

According to the submitted document, the actions of the education system for sustainable development are planned to be committed with 5 main priorities, emphasizing the importance of the "Education for Sustainable Development" program in ensuring the "17 Sustainable Development Goals”. The priorities suggested by the road map are:

  • Integration of the concept of "Education for Sustainable Development" into global, regional and national policies,
  • implementation and development of the "holistic institutions" approach in the education system,
  • capacity building of the education system, aimed at improving the knowledge, skills, values and approaches necessary to ensure sustainability,
  • engagement of youth in sustainable development, including decision-making processes,
  • the importance of communities as key players in transformation.

The presented roadmap also includes the framework of the main directions for the implementation of the “Education for Sustainable Development-2030” program, which aims to foster leadership processes on the part of member states, as well as multi-stakeholder approaches.

During the discussion, examples of best practices of European countries supporting the implementation of the program (France, Germany, Sweden, Hungary) were presented, which particularly emphasized the protection of the environment, engagement of youth in sustainable development, development of national policies towards sustainable development, multi-stakeholder systemic approaches, and steps aimed at raising awareness.

It should be noted that the "Education for Sustainable Development" program is an integral component of the "Education 2030 Agenda". It directly contributes to the implementation of the 4th Sustainable Development Goal, the aim of which is ensuring quality and inclusive education, with a focus on building responsibility for the future.
