RA Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Karen Giloyan received representatives of the Armenian Sports Committee of the Deaf, who participated in the Summer Deaflympics from 1 May to 15 May in the Brazilian city of Caxias and won 5 bronze medals.
The Armenian Deaflympic team includes 7 athletes․ Bronze medals were won by Greco-Roman wrestlers Sarkis Sargsyan (55 kg), Zhora Grigoryan (67 kg), Narek Nikoghosyan (87 kg), freestyle wrestler Senik Serobyan (57 kg) and judo athlete Robert Gevorgyan (60 kg).
In addition to the medalists, the Chairman of the Armenian Sports Committee of the Deaf Grigor Grigoryan, coaches Gagik Serobyan, Martin Alikhanyan, Zhirayr Hovhannisyan and Artyom Melkonyan also participated in the meeting with the ESCS Deputy Minister.
Karen Giloyan congratulated the winners and thanked them for the satisfactory results: “I am grateful to you for the participation. The budget for next year has been approved, and you will receive all the financial allocations that are provided by law. By the way, in this part, we also intend to increase the amount of allocations which will enhance the meetings and competitions.”
Karen Giloyan also noted that soon we will have a sports school of excellence and an Adaptive Sports Center in the same building, which will provide great opportunities for people with disabilities and help them become more professional.
“The team of the deaf is one of our best teams, and it will have the opportunity to use the services of the newly created gym and also have some physiotherapy and psychological help at the adaptive sports center. I assure you, you are always in the spotlight of the State. I will spare no efforts to improve the conditions for you,” stated the ESCS Deputy Minister.
Chairman of the Armenian Sports Committee of the Deaf Grigor Grigoryan thanked the ESCS Ministry for longstanding assistance: “Thank you for your support and cooperation․ By the way, this is the second time our athletes have won medals at the Deaflympic Games. We are very pleased with their results․ This is really a great achievement․ Our athletes and coaches have many years of experience, and we are confident that we will still achieve greater success.”
Note that the Summer Deaflympics in the Brazilian city of Caxias were supposed to be held in 2021, but were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
