ESCS Minister Zhanna Andreasyan and Deputy Minister Hasmik Avagyan watched the play-off round of the “School Basketball League” games held under the auspices of the RA Prime Minister at the “Mika” Sports Complex of the Sports Management Centre.

They watched the 1/8 finals between the 5th–6th grade teams of Charentsavan Basic School №4 and Kapan Basic School №13, where the Kapan team secured a hard-fought 18:17 victory in a tense battle and advanced to the next round.

The Minister also met with the representatives of the participating teams and wished them success in their upcoming meetings.

As stated by Drastamat Muradyan, the chief referee of the “School Basketball League” sports games, there has been considerable interest towards this tournament, which is being held for the first time, among schoolchildren from both Yerevan and the regions of Armenia. Over 8,000 schoolchildren participated in the community-level stages of the sports games across two age groups.

From the perspective of promoting and popularizing basketball, the idea of organizing such a tournament is highly commendable, since it encompasses hundreds of schools from across the country. The teams advancing to the finals were indeed the best, becoming known in an objective competition environment. Based on the results of these three days, we can definitely state that the spectacle is guaranteed. I am confident that the semi-finals and finals will be the most spectacular and exciting matches,” noted Drastamat Muradyan, stating that the tournament is indeed a success.

The “School Basketball League” sports games are held to popularize basketball among schoolchildren, promote a healthy lifestyle, and identify talented and promising athletes. According to the chief referee of the games, Drastamat Muradyan, a number of schoolchildren having no formal basketball background but having relevant potential, have already stood out during the tournament.

The Syunik region's fifth and sixth graders, in particular, make a positive impression. They are not represented in the Armenian championships, but there are many talented children who, I hope, will take up basketball seriously,” Drastamat Muradyan says.

Based on his assessment, the first-year participation rate can be regarded as positive.
