Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan received President of the European Fencing Confederation, member of the Executive Committee of the International Fencing Federation Giorgio Scarso.

ESCS Deputy Minister Karen Giloyan, President of the Armenian Fencing Federation Armen Grigoryan and Executive Director Natalia Buniatyan also attended the meeting.

Welcoming the guest, ESCS Minister Zhanna Andreasyan noted that sports development and internationalization are among the priorities of the Government of the Republic of Armenia.

“In December 2023, the RA Strategy for physical culture and sports for 2024-2030 was approved, with a special emphasis on internationalization. In 2023, we took significant steps by successfully hosting 5 major international championships in Armenia. In 2024, the final of the UEFA Futsal Champions League will be hosted in Yerevan, and the qualifying matches for the basketball World Cup will follow shortly.” said the Minister during the meeting, emphasizing that the policy of holding international tournaments will be ongoing. Touching upon the advancement of fencing in Armenia, the Minister highlighted the importance of involving coaches and referees of the Armenian Fencing Federation in training and referee seminars organized by the European Fencing Confederation.

In this regard, the prospect of including experts from Armenia in several working groups within the European Fencing Confederation was considered.

“The European Fencing Confederation considers it highly important to build ties with Armenia, a country with a promising future in the sport,” said President of the Confederation Giorgio Scarso marking that he was impressed by the 2018 European U23 Fencing Championship held in Armenia.

ESCS Deputy Minister Karen Giloyan emphasized that fencing is a popular sport with deep traditions in Armenia.

Following the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen the cooperation.
