At the European Wrestling Championship held in Zagreb, Croatia, freestyle wrestler Vazgen Tevanyan (65 kg category) won the gold medal, defeating the representative of Bulgaria Mikyay Salim Naim with a score of 12:1 in the finals.
Vazgen Tevanyan won a gold medal at the European Championship among seniors for the first time in his career. Prior to that, he was the winner of the European U17, U20 and U23 Championships.
Tevanyan started the fight in the 1/8 finals, where he defeated the representative of Israel Josh Stewart Finesilve with a score of 10:0. In the quarter-finals, Tevanyan has already gained an advantage over the Azerbaijani wrestler with a score of 4:1 and in the semifinals defeated the wrestler of Armenian origin representing Ukraine Eric Arushanyan with a score of 12:4.
Freestyle wrestler (79 kg) Arman Avagyan competed for the bronze medal, but suffered a painful defeat with a score of 4:7. Avagyan started the fight in the 1/4 finals, where he achieved an advantage over Romanian Maxim Vasilioglo with a score of 5:1. However, in the semifinals, the representative of Armenia lost to the representative of Greece Georgios Kougioumtsidis with a score of 10:12.
Two-time European champion, and world bronze medalist Arsen Harutyunyan reached the finals of the European Championship, defeating French representative of Armenian origin, wrestler Arman Eloyan with a score of 10:0 in the semi-finals of the 61 kg category. The opponent of Harutyunyan in the finals will be the representative of Albania Zelimkhan Abakarov. Harutyunyan started the fight in the quarter-finals, where he defeated the representative of Turkey Emrah Ormanoglu with a score of 7:0.
Another representative of Armenia, Hrayr Alikhanyan (74 kg), got the right to hold a consolation match, as the representative of Slovakia, Tajmuraz Salkazanov, who defeated him in the quarterfinals, reached the finals. In the consolation match, the Armenian wrestler will compete with Macedonian Rasul Shapiev, and in case of victory, he will compete for the bronze medal against the representative of Georgia.
The European Championship will last until April 23: After freestyle, the carpet will be handed over to Greco-Roman wrestlers.
Rudik Mkrtchyan (55 kg), Gevorg Gharibyan (60 kg), Hrachya Poghosyan (63 kg), Slavik Galstyan (67 kg), Shant Khachatryan (72 kg), Malkhas Amoyan (77 kg), Samvel Grigoryan (82 kg), Vigen Nazaryan (87 kg), Arthur Aleksanyan (97 kg) and David Hovasapyan (130 kg) will participate in the competitions as members of the Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling team under the leadership of Armen Babalaryan.
