Aram Amirkhanyan, a high school student from Armenia, has won a bronze medal at the 2nd International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), held from August 2–9 in Beijing, China. The Olympiad brought together 284 students from 60 countries.
Each country could send up to two teams of a maximum of four participants each (80 teams in total). Participants were required to be under the age of 20. Armenia was represented by one team.
The team was formed from 11th-grade students of the pilot educational program Generation AI, jointly implemented by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia and the Foundation for Armenian Science and Technology (FAST). The selection was based on the results of a local competition involving around 400 participants from the program.
Armenia’s team included Generation AI students from the Vanadzor Special School for Advanced Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences -Aram Amirkhanyan, Seryozha Nazaryan, and Vahe Pluzyan - as well as David Jaghatsphanyan from Vanadzor’s Griboyedov High School No. 11. In the team ranking, Armenia placed 16th, while in the individual competition, Aram Amirkhanyan secured the bronze medal.
The Olympiad was held in three stages: home round (3 tasks), team round (tasks in two phases: simulation and Galbot robot), individual round (6 AI-related tasks).
The Armenian team was coached by Tigran Ishkhanyan (AI teacher at Vanadzor Special School for Advanced Studies in Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Vanadzor Griboyedov High School No. 11, Senior Scientist at Wolfram Research Inc., PhD in Physical and Mathematical Sciences). Observers included Anush Ayvazyan, Head of Education Programs at FAST, and Avag Sayan, Content Lead for the Generation AI program.
Launched in 2023, the Generation AI program will expand to 23 public schools in the regions of Armenia and Yerevan starting from the 2025/26 academic year. Aimed at building an educational pathway for future AI scientists, the program is designed for students in grades 10 - 12 and provides the opportunity to study advanced mathematics, programming (Python), the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, and to implement practical AI projects.
