Greco-Roman wrestlers Artur Aleksanyan and Gevorg Gharibyan claimed gold medals at the European Championships in Rome; and Karen Aslanyan became a bronze medalist.

Artur Aleksanyan (97 kg) defeated the Italian Nikolos Kakhelashvili in the finals with a score of 7:1, becoming the five-time European champion.

The champion of Rio Olympic Games began the fight in the 1/8 finals, where he defeated Turk Cenk Ildem with a score of 7:1. In the quarterfinals Aleksanyan won with a score of 9:0 over Bulgarian Kiril Milenov Milov; and in the semifinals he defeated the Finn Matti Elias Kuosmanen with a score of 8:1.

Gevorg Gharibyan (60 kg) competed with the Turkish athlete Kerem Kamal for a gold medal. The match was finished with a score of 5:5, but the victory was given to Gevorg Gharibyan as he made a 4-point trick. Gharibyan began the fight in the 1/8 finals, where he defeated the Bulgarian Avgustin Boyanov Spasov with a score of 9:1. In the quarterfinals, the Armenian wrestler defeated Azerbaijani Murad Bazarov with a score of 8:0; and in the semifinals he gained an advantage over the Estonian Hilary Maygisalu with the same score.

Karen Aslanyan (67 kg) scored a bronze medal, beating Hungary’s representative Kristian Istvan Vanza with a score of 7:5. Aslanyan began from the qualification round, where he defeated the Swedish athlete Oscar Simon Erlandson scoring 3:1. In the 1/8 finals, the Armenian wrestler beat Georgian Georgi Shotadze with a score of 9-0; in the quarterfinals he defeated Serbian Wrestler Mate Nemesh scoring 10:1, and in the semi-finals he lost to Russian athlete Nazir Abdullaev scoring 3-4.

Earlier, Karapet Chalyan (77 kg.) became a bronze medalist.

Thus, the Greco-Roman wrestling team of Armenia won 4 medals at the European Championships. The national team also included Rudik Mkrtchyan (55 kg), Sahak Hovhannisyan (63 kg), Malkhas Amoyan (72 kg), Ruben Gharibyan (82 kg), Maksim Manukyan (87 kg) and David Hovasapyan (130 kg).

From February 14, freestyle wrestlers will begin to compete for medals. By the decision of the coaching staff of the Armenian freestyle wrestling team, Mihran Jaburyan (57 kg), Arsen Harutyunyan (61 kg), Volodya Frangulyan (65 kg), Gevorg Mkheyan (70 kg), Hrayr Alikhanyan (74 kg), Arman Avagyan (74 kg), (79 kg), Hovhannes Mkhitaryan (86 kg), Marzpet Galstyan (92 kg), Sargis Hovsepyan (97 kg) and Levan Berianidze (125 kg) will participate in the European Championship.
